Rakcham village from Kalpa Via HRTC: A hidden gem of Himachal

Rakcham village from Kalpa

Hi travellers,
In a world of social media and Instagram, everything is fast-paced. The content. Comments. Even the attention span has become short. This has also changed the way people travel. Everyone wants a luxurious yet authentic experience without trying the raw travel experience.

In my opinion, if you want to have the real and raw experience of any place, then try the local transport. Yes, no cabs or bikes can give you this experience. Want to know more?

Let’s explore the journey of Rakcham village from Kalpa in HRTC:

Rakcham Village: The Hidden Jewel of Kinnaur

Away from the crowded cities and over hyped hillstations, there is a hidden gem of Kinnaur in Sangal Valley. With the Baspa river flowing calmly across the valley with its turquoise water. Tiny Himalayan settlements remind us how simple life is and our tendency to complicate it.

Where is Rakcham village?

The exact location of this village is described as being between Sangla and Chitkul at an elevation of 2900 meters. This place is surrounded by snow-covered Himalayan peaks and dense alpine forest that feels unreal. As we go deep into the area, we can find several Kinnaur-style houses in open meadows.

Why is Rakcham village unique?

It is a very reasonable question to ask. Indeed, all these can also be seen in popular places like Chitkul. Then what makes this village unique?
And why should we choose it?

Despite the scenic views to be found in many places, the village of Rakcham has something different to offer. Something rare and in demand. Peace and calm.
Yes, even though this place has natural beauty that feels like a part of heaven. It is a fairly less crowded village. Not because it is any less, but beautiful. Rather, it is a bit more challenging as it lies in a remote region closer to the Indo-Tibetan border.
Because of this experience it offers, Rackham has a more authentic experience to offer than Chitkul does.

How to reach Rakcham village?

There are several ways to visit it, and you can opt as per you convince. But if you ask me, my favorite is travelling in HRTC. Not because it is the most comfortable or luxurious one.
Rather, it provides you with that authentic Kinnauri experience that feels like a calm movie montage. The narrow, high-elevation roads cross through rugged terrain with rivers and mountains. All this pauses time and provides an immersive experience.

There are two major routes through which you can reach Rakcham village via HRTC:

1. Shimla to Rakcham village route:

  • This route starts from Shimla and covers a total distance of about 250km. The road conditions are a mix of highways and mountain roads.
  • If you want a long mountain journey experience across the valley, then it is best to choose this.
  • This is ideal for first-time travellers as it is more accessible, but it is quite tiring and exhausting.

2. Rakcham village from the Kalpa route:

  • If you are already in Kinnaur and want to experience more of the Kinnaur valley, then this is a perfect route from Kalpa to Rakcham.
  • This route is greener with mountains covered with pine forest areas.
  • The entire journey is less tiring and offers a peaceful scenic view.
  • It is also perfect for adventure lovers and road trip lovers.

In my personal opinion, Rackcham village from Kalpa gives a perfect start to the authentic experience.

As you slowly travel through the terrain, you can see the beauty of nature and its surroundings.

Best time to visit Rakcham village:

March to June

This is the season when the valley has pleasant weather conditions and appears greener. It is also the blooming season for several flowers in the region. It is a surreal experience as the cool breeze blows and the bright contrast between the flowers and the greenery.
If you are also planning to visit for pleasant weather, this is one of the best times to visit the Rakcham village.

July to August

Similar to previous seasons, this time period is dangerous even for advanced travelers due to the road and terrain conditions. It is quite unsafe for road travel, and travelers often suggest not planning trips during this period.

September to October:

Ideal season for road trips and photography. Travelling in HRTC also feels magical during this season and is recommended. The forest turns golden because of autumn, and there is a clear view of the mountains.
If you are planning to go to Rackcham village from Kalpa in HRTC, then it is the best time.

December to February:

This is not a beginner-friendly season, especially for road travel. Despite the village looking beautiful and cozy, it is not ideal for a first-time visit.

Travelling in HRTC: Tips to remember

1. Start early in the morning

Always plan travel during the daytime as HRTC functions only during day time and a very few buses are available during the evening. This is to ensure safety as the valley conditions are unpredictable.

2. Confirm bus timings:

The timings can be a little unpredictable, especially in remote areas due to the weather. So, always reach out and confirm the timings. If needed, reach out to trusted locals for help.

3. Ensure you have cash

As this is a remote area with very few ATM’s available. UPI and online transactions aren’t yet common, so always carry cash with you for payments.

4. Proper acclimatization

The Rakcham village is located at a high altitude, and many travelers often experience altitude sickness. It can include a wide range of symptoms. Therefore, it becomes important to undergo proper acclimatization before you start travelling.

5. Make sure the bus is HRTC

Few local buses operate in this area. They often are not the safest and most reliable. So, always make sure you get on the HRTC bus only. You can connect with authentic guides or locals for clarity.
